Background
There is a clear correlation between digital and social exclusion. People who are most vulnerable, or most disadvantaged socially are also likely to be disadvantaged digitally – either being unable to afford access to Internet technologies, lacking the skills to use it, being unaware of the potential benefits, or in some cases a combination of all these. The ability to understand the geographical nature of digital and social exclusion within local communities can help to identify those areas in most need and where innovative use of technology to tackle social deprivation can have most impact. In other words mapping the digital and social geographies of an area can be a catalyst for an innovation process to identify opportunities for action and is a good starting activity on the Set-Up phase of this Innovation Process.
